Making Change in Childbirth

For the past few days I’ve been receiving emails for organizations around the country and around the world about childbirth activism.

It seems as though we may be reaching a critical mass.  There are groups of mothers and father, women and men, who are standing up for women’s rights in childbirth cropping up all over the world.

We have come to a point where we are recognizing the violence against women that is happening in childbirth.  We are no longer blind to this abuse, we see it, we feel it, and we are saying, “NO MORE!”

Families are not just saying what about what you did to me, they are saying stop doing this to my birthing sisters.  We are banding together to make birth better for all.

Here are a few organization that I know of working towards change in maternity care….

Coalition for Breech Birth who is currently organizing the 3rd International Breech Birth Conference.

Informed Choice Coalition who has organized a 10 month CHOICE: A Birth and Baby Film Festival in Ottawa which has lead to the Birth Action here in Ontario

Human Rights in Childbirth who organized the Human Rights in Childbirth Conference June 2012

Mothers of Change who have a number regional chapter and initiatives to improve maternity care.

One World Birth who successfully screened the new film Freedom for Birth is 1000 location in 50 countries.

Where’s My Midwife – who have successfully achieved hospital privileges for midwifes in multiple hospitals in the USA and Canada

Parto do Principio- who held a home birth march in Brazil this past summer.

Vancouver Birth Trauma who has organized three Birth Rallies

Improving Birth held a national rally for change on Labor Day and is organizing a walk.

Consumers Supporting Midwifery Care an Ottawa based organization promoting access to midwifery care for all women who desires access.

If you know anymore please let me know.
